Rock and roll in Kolkata

The crowd at Someplace Else, The Park lived it up on a Saturday night with Them Clones at work, keeping the bass high!

Rock and roll beats reverberated deep and struck a formidable chord with the audience which looked like they wouldn't have enough. CT spotted telly actor Ronnie nodding his approval of the music along with Anurupa.

The following Monday, Ganesh Talkies made sure that the crowd forget their dreaded Monday 'blues' with their music that was fresh. Even fresher were their costumes which reminded one of the band-baaja people! CT liked the kitsch element and certainly loved vocalist Suyasha's oversize goggles!

Good thing about Music!

10 tips for bands to do better on social media!

1. Reach Out To Other Artists
So you just joined Facebook and have a grand total of 50 fans (44 of which are your extended family). Well, you know how you can hook new fans by opening for another band on stage? The same goes for Facebook.
“We have some bands that have Facebook Pages that grow really slowly, so we try to reach out to other artists who they have a relationship with, and that tends to drive those ‘likes’ up,” says Allison Schlueter, VP of digital marketing at Island Def Jam Music Group.
Ask a band whom you’re tight with to post your new music video/track/album art to their wall with a link back to your Facebook Page, and remember to return the favor — or, you know, you could just buy said band a beer the next time you play together.
Still, Schlueter reminds us, those initial 50 fans are pretty valuable, so don’t forget them when your Page has ballooned to 75 fans. “You can have 37 million fans, but how many of those are loyal?” Schlueter says. “Those [early adopters] are the ambassadors for the artist.”

2. Take Your Fans Backstage
In order to make sure those ambassadors keep spreading the gospel of your gospel, make sure to give them what they so desire: backstage access to you (especially the groupies, am I right?).
“The number one thing for people to do when creating their Page is be really personal,” says Meredith Chin, manager of corporate communications at Facebook. “Previously, you had to wait for your favorite musician to be on Leno [to find out more about him], but now you can see when they’re touring, what’s going on backstage, etc.”
A lot of bigger musicians rely on their labels/managers/PR etc. to update their social media channels for them. If you’ve hit the big time, try to avoid posts of this nature, cautions Chin. Fans appreciate the extra effort.

3. Go Beyond the Music
Yes, you are a band, and people likely enjoy your music, but they also probably like other things about you — your style, your tastes, your opinions on the domestication of American wildlife, whatever.
“Make your fans want to check out what you’re doing on Facebook,” says Myles Grosovsky, of Big Hassle Online Marketing.” I always love to hear about things that bands are into that aren’t directly tied to their own work. Remember — fans look up to bands. We tend to follow the bands’ lead on discovering new things. They’re our tastemakers.”
Instead of always posting content directly related to your band, share videos, pictures and articles that you find interesting, which will, in turn, spark conversation with and among your fans.

4. Ask For Input From Fans
One way you can really connect with your followers is to ask for their input. Chin tells us that Keith Urban used the platform to crowdsource an album cover. He posted two pictures before the release, which garnered thousands of comments and Likes.
Chin also suggests making use of Facebook Questions to reach out to fans. “It’s really lightweight and makes it easy to get that feedback,” she says. You can use the tool to ask yes-or-no questions (“Should we add Arkansas to our tour schedule?”) or pose multiple choice queries (“Which song title is the most evocative?”)
You can also get your fans involved by posting pictures of meet-and-greets and concerts and asking fans to tag themselves. That level of engagement also doubles as promotion for you, as tagged snaps will pop up in the news feed of your fans’ friends, prompting them to check you out, too.

5. Be Visual
As much as your fans might hang on your every word, some of them are, in fact illiterate. Just kidding (kind of). But, seriously, Facebook lets you share photos and videos, so make sure to exercise that option.
“Any time an artist does any kind of status update, include a photo, because a photo speaks volumes,” says Doug Barasch, director of new media at Verve Music/Universal Music. “Or include a video clip, if you have a camera.”
Photos and video are much more dynamic content than just text, and fans are much more likely to comment on and “like” updates that they find compelling. For even greater ease of use, we suggest downloading apps like Instagram and PicPlz, which allow you to take awesome, dynamic snaps and easily share them on Facebook, as well as to a network of fans on those individual services.

6. Make Everything an Event
It may seem obvious, but every time you’re playing a show, you should create an event and invite your fans. “But the venue I’m playing already created an event! Why do I need to?” you may whine. Maybe because all of your followers might not necessarily be fans of the venue in question. Cover all your bases.
“Artists really need to take advantage of Events,” says Barasch. “Any time you post an event, that shows up in your fans’ news feed. And if someone RSVPs to that event, that RSVP shows up in their news feed as well.”
Hot tip: We know you look much more rock ‘n’ roll when you litter said event invitation with asterisks and LOLcat speech (or perhaps that’s just the bands in my neighborhood), but event invites of that nature are confusing and misleading. Make sure you have all the relevant information clearly stated before you add your own special flair — you want people to show up, after all.
Barasch also recommends you create invites for events such as TV appearances and album releases. Obviously, your fans can’t attend “My Disc Drops on May 23,” but RSVPing “Yes” makes it more likely that they will, in fact, buy it when it drops.

7. Don’t Just Ask For Things
“Facebook can be a very important tool to build awareness around sales of music, ticket sales, merchandise, etc., but fans will tune out if they’re constantly being asked to open their wallets,” warns Grosovsky.
So go easy on the shilling. If you post a “buy” link to your new album at 3 p.m., it will still be there at 4 p.m. There’s no need to repost it. Instead, keep up a dialogue with fans that reminds them why they love your music, which will impel them to shell out the cash for a show or merch.
Chin cites Javier Dunn as a prime example of good communication with fans. “The great thing about his page is that he responds to all of the posts on his wall,” she says. “People feel very connected to him. It’s the same as writing a letter to a musician and hearing back from them.”

8. Don’t Forget the Basics
Unless your band name is ►◄▲▼, or some other Witch House concoction, make sure to lay out all of your info — band name, bios, contact info, etc. — as clearly as possible.
“One thing I find frustrating and think bands can improve on is posting their bios and their names on their Facebook,” says Amy Sciarretto, from Roadrunner Records. “It’s helpful for journalists needing or wanting to fact-check.”

9. Offer Exclusive Content
It’s a fact: People like free things, and if you give them free things, they will “like” you more. We’re not saying you should post your entire album — free of charge — to Facebook and offer each fan comp tickets for life, but throwing your social media followers something that they can’t get anywhere else is surefire way to garner more fans (and keep the ones you have).
Barasch recommends using a “like” gate as a mechanism for distributing content like videos and downloads. If you’re unfamiliar with “like” gates, they work thusly: If a fan “likes” your Page, he unlocks content. It’s as easy as that.
They’re also super easy to set up, which leads us to our next tip…

10. Check Out Some Tools

Yes, Facebook offers bands a lot when it comes to profiles — galleries, a wall, etc. — but it’s becoming more and more necessary to add apps into the mix. And before you go into some long monologue about how you don’t have time to set anything up because you have to remix that song/call that guy back/secure a melatrone, chill out. Apps aren’t that difficult to figure out, and they don’t take that long to plug in.
We recommend checking out apps like BandPage, ReverbNation and Damntheradio, which bring in elements like music players, events listings, merch sales, “like” gates, email list builders, etc. Most of them have a free option, so, no worries — you do get to eat this month.

Country music makes inroads in the city!!!

Whistles and hollers erupt as the lights go down, showing that this collection of more denim and plaid, than anywhere else in the eastern hemisphere, was ready to rock at Saturday night’s Blazing Guitars 2. The 1,500-seat Music Academy at TTK Road was nearly packed by attendees of the country music concert organised by the publication, Anglos in the Wind, and the band, The New Horizons.

The captivating show was reminiscent of a warm summer night, sitting in the grass at a Nashville country music festivals, and had all of the accompanying southern charm. The concert was a major production that took months of planning and rehearsals for a band that played over 30 different tunes in one night.

“It took almost three months of hard work and rehearsals. During the period, we all had our ups and downs, but on stage, we always pulled it off. It was a great show,” said Barry D’Rozario, musical director of Blazing Guitars.

The concert opened with a solemn but sweet performance of Power of Love, and then the kicked off and set list spanning almost the entirety of the country music repertoire that included music by legends like Brad Paisley, Patty Lovelace, George Straight and of course, Chet Atkins.

“I will always keep the live country music scene alive in Chennai,” said Barry. “I’m glad that I brought country music to a wider audience in not just Chennai, but probably in India.” The concert also included cameos by the legendary guitarist, Tommy Smith, who showed off his virtuosity and experience with classic tunes by Mel Torme and Chet Atkins along with the infamous Guitar Boogie by Arthur Smith.But whether it was the twangy guitar solos by Darren Netto, the keyboard support from Barry or the solid harmonies from Conrad Simmons, all of the musicians were radiant, and the balance of the ensemble was superb and the chemistry was hard to beat. “It was brilliant playing for a great audience with brilliant musicians.Very awesome. You can’t explain it in words,” said Conrad.The crowd was elated and the concert concluded with an inspiring performance of Let Your Love Go that brought all musicians and singers onstage and had everyone in the audience on their feet dancing and clapping.“I felt like a rock star,” said singer, Amanda Doggett.She was seemingly proud of her first performance at Blazing Guitars and her contribution to the Anglo- Indian community. “It definitely brings out what we Anglo-Indians have and the passion for country music.

We love to dance, so we love country music. It gets our feet tapping.”

-----The Band - TIFFIN BOX----

Tiffin Box was founded by a bunch of boys who wanted to make music, interested in bringing a new genre of metal.They succeeded in their endeavor to create what like to call 'Tantric Metal'. While the Hindustani vocals and the Sanskrit shlokas give the music a melodic touch, the growls and screeches, along with heavy guitar riffs complement each other brilliantly, and at the same time, add power and aggression to the entire composition. The addition of frequently used jazz signatures and double bass grooves also influence the sound of the band to a great extent.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-----The Band - CIRCUIT----
It all started in mid 2010 i.e when 5 Loyolites who had similar musical interests decided to put together the *CIRCUIT*.
Immense talent n budding talent that has to be given way in order to make the ROCK scene bigger n better
Band Parikrama turns 20!
One of the India's best-Known and longest standing rock acts, "Parikrama", turns 20 today! Hearty Congratulations to the band and to all the one who was part this successful 20 yrs journey!
Parikrama Keyboardist Subir Malik shares with us 20 of the band's most memorable moments!
-- The debut concert: At Father Angel School, on September 15, 1991. Dilip (from Chennai), who played drums with us for almost 15 years (since October 1992), was in the audience then, front row, head banging!
-- Our first outstation concert: March 18, 1992, at Roorkie. We got a big bus, with a ‘Parikrama On Tour’ banner in the front.
-- Our first major train journey: To Chennai, in second class, non AC. Had all our friends along and had a blast.
-- The sight of our drummer’s legs: He had fallen head first, while playing at MCC Madras, protruding on top of the drum kit. He just fell in the middle of the song. Everyone was in splits.
-- The first AIDS awareness concert: On September 28, 1992, totally done and sponsored by Parikrama.
-- Chintan’s (bass guitarist) first electrocution on stage: We were playing at an all-girls college, which can be a major distraction!
-- Our first real fan frenzy: Thousands of beautiful undergraduate doctors at a Delhi college. We ended up playing for five hours.
-- Our first all-night concert: We played till six am and debuted our second original composition Gonna Get It...
-- First attempt at ‘riding the crowd’: I jumped into the crowd, and they, not knowing what it meant, just moved aside, and I fell five feet down.
-- Winning all major awards at a college fest: We turned professional after that show.
-- Debut concert at Mumbai, December 28, 1995: To silence a few front-rowers, I threw a Parikrama t-shirt towards a guy, and got it back on my face in a few seconds. The same guy, after the performance, came back and took my personal tee, with the whole band’s autograph.
-- Release of our first recorded single: Till I’m No One Again... Got our own website: And immediately released all our originals for free downloads. Using fireworks: We took the use of pyrotechniques and fireworks to another level. Welcome to the birth of showbiz!
-- Playing for Iron Maiden: March 17, 2007. The froth on the beer was when we finished our set and the organizer said, “Play more! Maiden wants you to play more.” Iron Maiden UK Tour: Iron Maiden invites us for a seven-city UK tour in June 2007.
-- Indonesia Tour: A fun-filled eight-city tour of Indonesia, December 2009. Used to get up at four am, take the flight, set up, sound check, play the gig, sleep by two am, up again, same schedule, next day, next city, next gig!
-- A trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos: Had sold out gigs and some unmentionable foods!
-- Representing India: At the prestigious Kennedy Centre, Washington DC. Amongst the audience were war veterans, Indians, Americans and people from all over the world. We got a standing ovation!
-- Twenty years down: Parikrama has completed 2 full decades, doing things our own way, not caring what critics say, playing the maximum number of gigs and still demanding the maximum money! And we are not stopping!
Avaroha article in "The Hindu"
A helping hand for young bands
James Jude Peter, Gilbert Xavier, Clement Samson Correya and Nijo Sebastian are brilliant musicians. Together they form the band White Sugar. At least three members of this city-based young band have other professions, joining together only when there are shows. Natural because, though White Sugar is one of the popular bands who have stuck together for more than five years now and with an average of 50 performances a year, there's still a feeling of insecurity.
White Sugar is just an example. There are tons of good bands out there with a whole lot of talented musicians and a looming career ahead but not yet established.
For young bands
This is where Avaroha steps in. This newly established company for band management and for DJs aims to ‘tap the growing seriousness related to different genres of music, which until sometime was not taken too seriously by the audience.'
“We are only trying to change the way people perceive music in our country. We intend to provide a platform for young bands, help them showcase their talent, manage their shows, provide chances for them to perform in various parts of the country,” says Nileena Babu, one of the four ‘founders' of this very innovative company.
Avaroha was a business plan hatched by four young management students, Nishant Gairola, Jasleen Sarna, Nivedha Priyadarshini and Nileena, of Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA).
Passion for music
“This was Nishant's idea and we joined him. All of us have a passion for music, any form, any genre, though none of us is a performer. We found so many bands fading out simply because they never got the exposure, while some of the big names took so much time to get themselves entrenched in the field. So, we thought of forming this company, sometime this March, with a belief that we would be able to help talented artistes get what they deserve,” adds Nileena, who hails from Chalakudy. In fact, the four have even waived campus placements for they firmly believe that Avaroha is their future.
To start with Avaroha panned possibilities in Chennai, where the company is now based. “Initially, the response was not very good. Chennai has so many young bands and there's a lot happening on the campuses. We spread our word to neighbouring cities like Bengaluru and Pondicherry. Nishant even went as far as Gangtok and Shillong where there are some amazing bands. We now have 35 bands lined up with us.”
What is it that they offer the bands who have signed contracts with them? “Avaroha understands the need of bands and its members. We investigate the potential and opportunities, scout for talent and also conduct a selection before signing them up. We deal with everything related to a band, like developing the band image, finding endorsements, helping them to record and produce albums, secure gigs, even promotions and ticketing for shows,” answers Lakshmi Vijayan, who has joined the company as Manager, Marketing and Sales.
Among the assurances Avaroha offers are three to four performances at different venues, a basic start of Rs. 10,000-15,000 for every performance, and regular shows at pubs, hotels and restaurants. “All this will vary depending on the popularity and status of the band,” says Nileena. Among the groups that have contracted with Avaroha are The Local Train, Colossal Figures, The Mangalz, (New Delhi), Tiffin Box, Forsaken, Amethysts, Drones from the Turbine, Allegro Fudge (Bengaluru), Blind Rituals, Panic Attack, Konnect, Pralay, Rang, Medusa (Mumbai), Summit Attempt, (Kolkata), Still Waters (Gangtok), Native Rules (Shillong).
Different services
Some bands, like White Sugar, are not tempted by the hotel and pub shows. “We don't want to be branded as a hotel band. We're not looking at such a contract. Of course, we are ready to play for special occasions but not as a regular job. What attracts us is assurance of shows at different cities in the country, helping us with recording and such,” opines Sreekanth, manager, White Sugar.
With sharp business acumen the four youngsters of Avaroha have drawn parallel plans to help draw bands and audience to their fold. “On July 30 this year we will be organising a live music fest, a six-hour event called ‘Buzzzard,' which will feature six bands from outside Chennai and a wild card entry from the city. There's a poll happening on Facebook from where the audience can get to choose the band they would like to hear. This will be held in Chennai. This is to create awareness about the work we do and also provide our bands a great platform,” informs Nileena.
Investors now have a stake in Avaroha to the tune of Rs. 7 lakhs. “Most of them are like-minded people who have shown confidence in us. We are going around talking to sponsors about our idea, especially Buzzzard.
The response has been very positive which is very encouraging. We have held discussions with pubs, hotels and restaurants in Chennai, Bengaluru and Pondicherry. Some of them have agreed to have bands from us play for them. We are hopeful that bands from Kochi and other cities in Kerala would join us. We're just talking to them. After all, this State has produced some great bands. And almost every band in the country has at least one Malayali artiste with them,” hopes Nileena.
